Household food waste is a common issue in many kitchens across the country. Leftover meals, spoiled vegetables, and forgotten ingredients often end up in the trash. A recent report from the National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Association, supported by USDA and ReFED data, reveals that the average U.S. family wastes around $1,500 worth of groceries each year. Nationally, surplus food is valued at more than $382 billion.
"We hear from families all the time: they want to save money, eat healthier, and waste less — but they're short on time," said Tricia Greyshock, President & CEO of NFRA. "The frozen and refrigerated aisles already have the answers. These foods give families flexibility, freshness, and savings — often without realizing it."
As families try to manage tighter budgets, frozen and refrigerated foods offer valuable support. NFRA leaders explain that most households want healthier meals, less waste, and affordable options. Frozen and refrigerated items provide long-lasting freshness, portion flexibility, and easier meal preparation, making them ideal for busy families.
According to NFRA’s 2025 Food Waste Insights Report, nearly half of shoppers choose more frozen foods because they stay fresh longer. About 64% say these foods help them manage rising grocery costs. Several simple swaps can help families save more. Frozen berries work well for smoothies and baked goods without spoiling. Frozen vegetables are flash-frozen at peak freshness, keeping them nutritious and ready to use. Buying proteins like meat or fish in bulk and freezing portions reduces waste and lowers costs. Frozen entrĂ©es are helpful on busy nights and prevent unnecessary takeout spending. Freezing leftovers early also creates quick meals for later.
Holiday seasons often lead to increased food waste due to extra cooking and overbuying. Experts recommend planning meals carefully, using make-ahead dishes, and keeping the refrigerator organized to reduce losses.
Small changes in daily habits can reduce household waste by half, saving families up to $750 each year. To help families waste less, NFRA’s Easy Home Meals platform offers recipes, storage guidance, shopping tips, and planning ideas that make groceries last longer.
With smart use of frozen and refrigerated foods, families can enjoy savings, better meals, and lower waste throughout the year.
