Ruby Hope, a three-year-old red fox Labrador from Indiana, is known for her joyful personality, dedication, and uplifting presence on the farm. As a certified service dog, she supports farmer Travis Burkhart, who was seriously injured in a car accident in 2008. His black Lab, Molly Grace, helped him through recovery, and after her passing, the family deeply felt the loss. Ruby Hope arrived as a special gift from a Minnesota farmer who had heard Travis’ story. From the moment she arrived, she bonded closely with him.
Ruby Hope quickly became both a skilled service dog and a source of happiness for everyone around her. She knows many helpful tasks and impressive tricks, but her greatest strength is the unconditional support she gives to Travis. In February, life on the farm changed for the better when farmers from across the country gifted Travis a track wheelchair. With it, he and Ruby Hope now explore the farm freely. They visit fields, check equipment, and reconnect with the work Travis loves, such as riding in the tractor during harvest and helping with straw and soybeans.
Ruby Hope stays close to Travis throughout the day, guiding him safely and assisting with daily farm duties. Twice each week, she attends his workout sessions, offering encouragement and companionship. Her presence motivates Travis and brings comfort during challenging moments.
While Ruby Hope is strong and focused when working, she is also kind, fun, and full of energy. Her family describes her as “pure joy on four paws,” a fitting description for a dog who brings warmth to every space she enters. She has become a key part of both the farm and the family, helping Travis stay connected to the land and the life he loves.
