Delaware farms awarded for long-term dedication

By Andi Anderson

Indiana recently awarded several Delaware County farms the prestigious Hoosier Homestead awards in recognition of their dedication to farming for over 100 years. The awards celebrate local farms that have been owned and operated by the same family for at least a century, highlighting their contribution to Indiana's agricultural industry.

State Representatives J.D. Prescott (R-Union City), Elizabeth Rowray (R-Yorktown), and State Senator Scott Alexander (R-Muncie) congratulated the recipients, praising their hard work and commitment to preserving the state's agricultural legacy.

“These farming families have fueled Indiana’s agriculture over the years, and their dedication is truly admirable,” said Rowray. “This award recognizes the generations of commitment that have kept these farms running and preserving our state’s heritage.”

The Hoosier Homestead awards are given to farms that have been operated by the same family for 100, 150, or even 200 years, qualifying them for centennial, sesquicentennial, or bicentennial awards, respectively.

“As someone who grew up in a farming family, I know firsthand the level of perseverance it takes to maintain a farm,” Prescott added. “This award celebrates the lasting legacy of these families and their vital contributions to Indiana’s agricultural history.”

Among the Delaware County recipients were the Abshire Farm, which has been in operation since 1864, receiving both centennial and sesquicentennial awards. The C Clifford Green Farm, established in 1874, earned a sesquicentennial award, while the Kirklin Farm, also from 1874, was awarded centennial and sesquicentennial honors.

Senator Alexander echoed the pride in these families' efforts. “Keeping a family farm running for over a century is no small feat. These awards honor that hard work and dedication.”

The Hoosier Homestead awards have been presented since 1976, with over 6,000 farms recognized to date. Ceremonies take place every spring and summer, with awardees honored for their lasting contributions to Indiana’s agriculture at events such as the Indiana State Fair.
