Farm Management Tour Highlights Diversification In Agriculture

By Andi Anderson

A farm management tour scheduled for July offers an excellent opportunity for farmers and agricultural learners to explore modern farming practices and successful business strategies. The tour includes visits to two different farms, each demonstrating unique approaches to improving farm productivity and income.

The first stop of the day features a cattle operation where the owners have developed innovative ways to add value to their livestock business. Their system includes raising stocker and feeder cattle while also selling freezer beef directly to customers. They have expanded their operations by running a small butcher shop and restaurant, which allows them to reach consumers directly. This direct marketing approach helps increase profits and build stronger customer connections.

During this visit, participants will learn about drylot feeding systems and grazing practices that support efficient cattle growth. The farmers will also explain the importance of maintaining accurate records and conducting on farm research. These practices help improve decision making and long term planning in livestock operations.

The second stop focuses on a diversified farm that combines crop production with additional business activities. This farm grows corn, popcorn, soybeans, and grass hay, showing how multiple crops can be managed together. Diversification helps reduce risks and provides more stable income, even when market conditions change.

Visitors will also learn about the differences between producing and marketing corn and popcorn. Each crop requires different techniques and offers unique benefits. In addition to farming, the family operates several off farm businesses that support their agricultural work. These activities create additional income sources and strengthen the overall farm business.
