The Agribusiness Council of Indiana (ACI) proudly announces that four of its members have achieved certification in the esteemed 4R Nutrient Stewardship program. This recognition underscores their commitment to implementing robust nutrient management practices that contribute to environmental sustainability and enhance crop production goals. The certified agribusinesses include:
- Crop Fertility Specialists in Rossville, Ind. – Year Three Certified
- Helena in Berne, Ind. – Year Three Certified
- The Andersons in Waterloo, Ind. – Year Three Certified
- Advanced Agrilytics – Year One Certified
The 4R Nutrient Stewardship program emphasizes adherence to a set of standards that promote responsible nutrient management. ACI members participating in the program commit to utilizing the Right Source of Nutrients at the Right Rate and Right Time in the Right Place, collectively known as the 4Rs. This science-based framework for plant nutrition management aligns with sustainable crop production while addressing the unique needs of individual farms.
Bruce Kettler, President & CEO of ACI, acknowledges the integral role of these agribusinesses in supporting farmers' production goals. He states, “The 4R Nutrient Stewardship program leans on scientific and proven practices that benefit the farmer and our society. These businesses bring value to their communities by sharing the latest environmental stewardship practices such as 4R.
The 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certification Program is a voluntary initiative for ACI members, encouraging agricultural retailers and independent crop consultants to adopt best practices that prioritize the 4Rs. This approach not only enhances plant nutrition management but also contributes to sustained crop production while considering the long-term improvement of water quality.
Mike Dunn, Director of Freshwater Conservation Programs for The Nature Conservancy and Chair of the Indiana Nutrient Stewardship Council, highlights the program's success and growth. He adds, “Congratulations to Crop Fertility Specialists in Rossville, Helena in Berne, The Andersons in Waterloo, and Advanced Agrilytics for their commitment to the 4Rs and becoming 4R Certified.”
The 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certification Program operates on a 3-year cycle, with retail locations audited based on standards developed by the Nutrient Stewardship Council. A private, third-party auditor evaluates each requirement during in-person audits to earn or maintain certification, ensuring ongoing adherence to best practices in nutrient management.
