Landowners, farmers, and fire practitioners in Harrison County will have an opportunity to learn more about prescribed burning and its benefits at an upcoming educational meeting organized by Purdue Forestry & Natural Resources (FNR).
The free event aims to provide valuable information about the role of prescribed fire in managing land, improving habitats, and supporting healthy ecosystems. The event will take place on September 9, 2026.
Prescribed fire is an important land management tool that helps control unwanted vegetation, improve wildlife habitats, and reduce the risk of larger uncontrolled wildfires.
During the meeting, attendees will gain a better understanding of why controlled burning is considered a valuable practice for maintaining forests, grasslands, and agricultural landscapes.
The event will also introduce participants to Prescribed Burn Associations (PBAs). These locally led groups bring together landowners and fire practitioners who work collaboratively to plan and conduct prescribed burns safely and effectively.
Attendees will learn what a PBA is, how it operates, and the steps required to become a member.
Another key topic of discussion will be Indiana’s new burn legislation. Organizers will explain how recent laws can benefit residents who are interested in using prescribed fire as a land management practice. The session will help participants understand the opportunities available under current regulations and how they can responsibly conduct burning activities.
The meeting is designed to encourage knowledge-sharing and cooperation among local landowners, agricultural producers, forestry professionals, and community members.
By bringing people together, organizers hope to increase awareness about the environmental and practical advantages of prescribed fire while promoting safe burning practices.
A light dinner will be provided for attendees, creating an informal setting for discussion and networking. Participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions and learn from experts and experienced practitioners involved in prescribed burning efforts.
