The George K. Kerner Farm in Warren County has been honored with the prestigious Hoosier Homestead Sesquicentennial Award, celebrating over 150 years of continuous operation by the same family. The award, presented by State Rep. Sharon Negele (R-Attica) and State Sen. Spencer Deery (R-West Lafayette), recognizes the farm's significant contribution to Indiana’s agricultural heritage since its establishment in 1872.
“Farming is so prominent in our community and a big part of our heritage," said Rep. Negele. "Congratulations to these longstanding families for their perseverance, hard work, and resilience to achieve this incredible milestone."
The Hoosier Homestead Award program honors farms that have been owned and operated by the same family for 100, 150, or 200 years, with awards given for centennial, sesquicentennial, and bicentennial milestones.
The Kerner Farm is among the select few to receive the Sesquicentennial Award, a testament to the family's enduring commitment to agriculture.
“Family farms like the Kerner Farm have made Indiana one of the top agriculture-producing states in the nation," added Sen. Deery. "Congratulations to the family for keeping this tradition alive and contributing to our state's agricultural history for more than 150 years."
The Kerner family farm was one of 104 farms recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their dedication and contribution to the state's agriculture industry.
The Hoosier Homestead ceremonies, which take place every spring and summer, have honored more than 6,000 farms since the award's inception in 1976.
The continued operation of the Kerner Farm reflects not only the family’s dedication but also the rich agricultural traditions that have shaped Indiana’s history. This recognition serves as a reminder of the importance of family-owned farms in maintaining the state’s strong agricultural legacy.
