Indiana Crop Weather: Rain Brings Relief


The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Crop Progress and Condition report (dated July 3) for Indiana for the weekend. The report provides an overview of crop and weather conditions in the state.

Corn:

  • 67 percent of the corn crop was silking, 11 days ahead of the 5-year average.
  • 62 percent of the corn crop was rated good to excellent, up 1 percentage point from the previous week.
  • Topsoil moisture levels were rated 69 percent adequate and 31 percent surplus.
  • Subsoil moisture levels were rated 71 percent adequate and 29 percent surplus.

Soybeans:

  • 26 percent of the soybean crop was blooming, 7 days ahead of the 5-year average.
  • 55 percent of the soybean crop was rated good to excellent, up 3 percentage points from the previous week.
  • Topsoil moisture levels were rated 69 percent adequate and 31 percent surplus.
  • Subsoil moisture levels were rated 71 percent adequate and 29 percent surplus.

Other crops:

  • 65 percent of the oat crop was headed, 11 days ahead of the 5-year average. • 50 percent of the wheat crop was headed, 7 days ahead of the 5-year average. • 90 percent of the hay crop was baled or put up, 10 days ahead of the 5-year average.

Weather:

  • The statewide average temperature was 73 degrees Fahrenheit, 1 degree above normal.
  • The statewide average precipitation was 2.6 inches, 0.4 inches above normal.

Crop conditions in Indiana are good. The corn and soybean crops are both ahead of schedule, and moisture levels are adequate. Hay production is also ahead of schedule. However, some areas of the state have experienced drought conditions, so farmers will need to monitor their crops closely.
