Cool and dry weather continued throughout much of the State which encouraged harvest progress for corn and soybeans, according to Nathanial Warenski, state statistician, USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office. Soil moisture levels decreased from the previous week, with 37 percent of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus.
The average temperature for the week was 53.4 degrees Fahrenheit, 1.8 degrees below normal for the State. The amount of rainfall varied from none to 0.62 inches over the week. The statewide average precipitation was 0.27 inches, 0.22 inches below normal. There were 6.2 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday.
Corn harvested for grain continued behind the five-year average with 58 percent of corn rated in good to excellent condition. Corn moisture content at harvest surpassed its five-year average slightly.
Soybeans harvested surged forward effectively surpassing its five-year average pace.
Winter wheat planted and winter wheat emerged continued behind their respective five-year averages as persistent dry conditions hindered emergence.
Pasture conditions declined slightly from the previous week with 25 percent of pastures rated in good to excellent condition.
Other activities for the week included various winter preparations, and manure and fertilizer applications.
