Indiana Hosts Water Management Planning Workshops

Indiana Hosts Water Management Planning Workshops

By Andi Anderson

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has announced a series of public workshops across the state to gather feedback on a new statewide water inventory and management plan.

The effort is being carried out under an executive order issued by Mike Braun and is intended to ensure Indiana’s water resources are managed responsibly for current and future generations.

The workshops will allow residents to share ideas and concerns related to water availability, use and planning.

According to the state, these sessions will focus on developing a regional water planning framework, improving water monitoring networks and creating an online platform for water data and management. Public input will play an important role in shaping the final plan.

“Water is an essential resource for life and for the vitality of all Indiana communities, which is why it’s crucial that Indiana’s ample water supply is available for Hoosiers in all corners of our state,” Braun said in a news release. “Through a transparent water inventory and development of a management process, we’ll make sure Indiana is well-positioned for resource needs now and for future generations.”

The statewide planning effort builds on earlier regional water studies led by the Indiana Finance Authority along with local and regional partners.

Utilities municipalities industries and other water users have contributed to this foundation, which now serves as the basis for broader statewide coordination.

Seven in person workshops are scheduled between February and May at locations across Indiana including Indianapolis, Madison, Washington, Fort Wayne, West Lafayette and Knox.

Each session will provide opportunities for discussion questions and feedback. An additional virtual session is planned for May with details to be announced later.

Beyond attending workshops, Hoosiers may also submit written feedback by email. The state encourages participation from a wide range of stakeholders including local officials, economic development organizations, soil and water conservation districts, researchers water utilities, agriculture users homeowners and recreational water users.

The workshops are designed to support open communication and informed decision making. State leaders emphasize that broad participation will help ensure the water management plan reflects diverse needs while protecting Indiana’s natural resources.

By engaging communities across the state, Indiana aims to create a long-term strategy that balances growth sustainability and responsible water use.
