Indiana’s 2024 winter wheat production is projected to reach 21.8 million bushels, according to Nathanial Warenski, State Statistician for the USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office.

This forecast is based on conditions as of July 1, 2024, and includes several key highlights from the Crop Production Report.

The yield for Indiana winter wheat is forecast at 87 bushels per acre. This figure represents a decrease of 5 bushels compared to last year but an increase of 1 bushel from the previous month’s forecast.

As of June 30, 64 percent of the crop had been harvested, and the crop condition was rated 77 percent good to excellent, an improvement from 70 percent at the same time last year.

On a national level, winter wheat production is forecast at 1.34 billion bushels, reflecting a 4 percent increase from the previous forecast and an 8 percent rise from 2023 in comparable states.

Based on July 1 conditions, the average yield in the United States is projected at 52.0 bushels per acre, up 0.6 bushels from last month and 1.5 bushels from last year’s average in comparable states.

The total area expected to be harvested for grain or seed in the United States is 25.8 million acres, unchanged from the Acreage report released on June 28, 2024, but up 5 percent from last year in comparable states.

Notably, record high yields are forecast in Michigan, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin for 2024.

These projections highlight the positive trends in winter wheat production despite some regional variations. Indiana’s stable production and improved crop conditions demonstrate the resilience and adaptability of its agricultural sector.

This detailed forecast provides valuable insights for farmers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers as they navigate the 2024 agricultural season.

The anticipated increase in national production underscores the importance of strategic planning and resource allocation to maximize yield and ensure food security.

As the season progresses, continued monitoring and support for wheat farmers will be crucial in achieving these forecasts and maintaining the overall health of the agricultural industry.
