Indiana's winter wheat harvest almost complete

By Andi Anderson

The winter wheat harvest in Indiana is nearing completion, remaining ahead of schedule, according to Nathanial Warenski, State Statistician at USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office.

Top-soil moisture levels showed improvement from the previous week, with 80 percent rated as adequate or surplus.

The average temperature for the week was 75.3 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 0.1 degrees above the normal temperature for the state. The statewide average precipitation was 2.23 inches, which is 1.31 inches above normal.

There were 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending July 14, allowing farmers ample time to tend to their crops.

Consistent rainfall and sporadic strong winds caused minor crop damage, such as downed branches and ponding in some areas.

Despite these challenges, corn silking and soybean blooming continued to progress well ahead of their respective five-year averages. Both crops remained stable in their condition, with 67 percent of corn and soybeans rated as good to excellent.

The winter wheat harvest is almost complete, showcasing the efficiency and hard work of Indiana's farmers.

Other activities during the week included repairing storm damage and mowing roadsides to maintain safety and accessibility.

Overall, the crop progress in Indiana is promising. The consistent rainfall and slightly above-normal temperatures have created favorable conditions for crop growth and harvest.

The increase in topsoil moisture levels has been beneficial, ensuring that the crops have the necessary resources to thrive.

Indiana farmers continue to demonstrate resilience and dedication, managing to keep crop conditions stable and completing the winter wheat harvest ahead of schedule.

As the season progresses, the positive outlook for Indiana's agriculture sector remains strong, supported by the cooperative weather conditions and the hard work of the farming community.
