Farmers and agricultural workers can now register for Indiana Farm Bureau’s anhydrous ammonia safety training sessions. These programs, offered in collaboration with Keystone Cooperative and supported by the INFB Women’s Leadership Committee, will take place across northern Indiana.
Training Schedule and Locations
- Feb. 13 – Keystone Cooperative Herbst, Marion, IN (6 p.m. ET)
- Feb. 18 – Whitley County Ag Museum, Columbia City, IN (6 p.m. ET) Includes PARP credits from Purdue Extension.
- March 3 – Keystone Cooperative Malden, Valparaiso, IN (5 p.m. CT)
The sessions will cover safety measures and best practices for handling anhydrous ammonia, a common nitrogen fertilizer. Experts from Keystone Cooperative’s safety team and agronomists will lead discussions on proper storage, transportation, and application techniques. Attendees will also have the opportunity to examine a cut-away nurse tank to better understand equipment components.
The Columbia City training on Feb. 18 will feature a regulatory update by John Woodmansee, a Purdue Extension agriculture educator. Farmers attending this session can earn PARP credits.
Anhydrous ammonia is widely used in agriculture for improving crop production, but it requires strict safety measures. “Indiana farmers use anhydrous ammonia in the spring and fall to fertilize our fields, increasing crop yields and ultimately supporting our food security,” said Janis Highley, INFB 2nd vice president and chair of the INFB Women’s Leadership Committee. “However, it’s important to remember that it is a dangerous chemical that must be stored, handled and transported properly. INFB’s Women’s Leadership Committee is committed to the wellbeing of our Hoosier farmers and want them to be fully educated in all safety precautions while using anhydrous ammonia.”
These training programs are free, with light snacks and beverages provided. Farmers and employees who handle anhydrous ammonia regularly are encouraged to attend. Registration is required and must be completed at www.infb.org/events at least three business days before the chosen session.
