California lawmakers have unanimously approved new legislation designed to accelerate the availability of E15 fuel across the state. The E15 Clean-Up Act removes regulatory and equipment-related challenges that have delayed broader access to the ethanol fuel blend.
The measure gained full support in both legislative chambers, highlighting bipartisan interest in expanding fuel choices for consumers. Supporters say the action could help lower fuel expenses while promoting cleaner transportation options.
“The passage of this bill means Californians will finally be able to enjoy savings at the pump with a lower-cost fuel blend that’s also better for the environment,” said RFA President and CEO Geoff Cooper.
He added, “We thank principal authors Sens. Bob Archuletta and Suzette Martinez Valladares, and Assemblymember David Alvarez, as well as the entire bipartisan California Problem Solvers Caucus for their leadership and commitment to reducing gas prices for California families. We are also grateful to Gov. Gavin Newsom for his ongoing strong support of E15.”
A key provision of the legislation allows fuel retailers to continue using certain existing vapor recovery systems for E15 dispensing when manufacturers confirm equipment compatibility. This approach reduces the need for costly equipment replacement and may encourage more stations to offer E15.
The legislation follows previous efforts that authorized E15 sales in California. With the bill now approved, attention shifts to the final regulatory process needed before broader market adoption can occur.
Recent regulatory reviews have provided additional momentum. State environmental officials have completed important evaluations of E15, and further approval steps are expected soon. These developments bring California closer to joining other regions where E15 is already widely available.
Research highlights potential economic benefits for drivers. Studies suggest expanded E15 access could generate significant fuel savings across California. Federal data also indicates that consumers in markets with E15 availability have experienced lower fuel costs compared to standard gasoline options.
Beyond potential savings, E15 is viewed as a tool for reducing emissions and supporting renewable energy goals. Expanding the use of renewable fuels can contribute to cleaner transportation while creating additional demand for ethanol production.
Industry stakeholders continue to provide education and outreach to fuel retailers and supply chain partners. Training events and information sessions are expected to assist businesses as they prepare for increased E15 availability.
The legislation marks another step toward greater renewable fuel use in California, supporting both economic and environmental objectives for consumers and the fuel industry alike.
