Access to capital remains one of the most important factors for success in the agriculture and food industries. From family farms and food processors to agribusiness startups and local food retailers, every operation requires financial resources to grow, innovate, and remain competitive.
Indiana's agriculture sector is highly diverse and includes crop producers, livestock operations, food manufacturers, agritourism businesses, and agricultural technology companies. While these businesses differ in size and focus, they all share a common need for reliable funding to support operations and future expansion.
For many businesses, revenue generated from product sales provides the foundation for growth. Strong financial management allows companies to reinvest profits and expand through self-financing. However, significant growth opportunities often require additional capital beyond what existing earnings can provide. In these situations, business owners frequently explore outside financing options such as loans, grants, and investment programs.
To help business owners better understand these opportunities, the Indiana Small Business Development Center (Indiana SBDC) is hosting the Financing Your Farm, Food & Agribusiness workshop. The event is designed to provide practical guidance on financing options available to farms, food-related businesses, and agribusiness operations throughout Indiana.
The workshop will focus on helping participants make informed financial decisions while minimizing costs and risks. Attendees will learn about various funding pathways available for agricultural enterprises, including loans, grants, and capital-raising opportunities. The session will also highlight updates to key financing and support programs introduced during 2026.
In addition to funding topics, the workshop will discuss industry developments and regulatory changes that may affect agricultural businesses. Participants will receive information on year-end planning strategies and gain insights into business preparation for 2027.
The event is intended for a wide range of agricultural stakeholders. Family farms, food processors, local food retailers, value-added producers, agritourism businesses, and emerging AgTech ventures can all benefit from the information presented. The goal is to help businesses navigate changing market conditions while strengthening their financial position and long-term sustainability.
The virtual workshop will take place on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EST. It will provide a platform for agricultural entrepreneurs and business owners to learn from experts, share experiences, and explore opportunities for future growth.
Supporting these efforts is the Indiana SBDC Agribusiness Initiative, which was launched in 2022 through a partnership involving the Purdue Center for Regional Development, the Indiana Small Business Development Center, and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture. The initiative provides specialized business advising and training services to agricultural and food industry businesses across the state.
The program offers support in several key areas, including financial and risk management, capital acquisition, loan preparation, value-added product development, export opportunities, and financial forecasting. By working through Indiana's regional SBDC offices, the initiative helps entrepreneurs and established businesses access resources needed for successful growth and transition planning.
As Indiana's agriculture sector continues to evolve, access to reliable financing and expert business guidance remains essential. Programs such as the Financing Your Farm, Food & Agribusiness workshop and the Indiana SBDC Agribusiness Initiative help equip farmers and agribusiness owners with the tools, knowledge, and resources needed to strengthen their operations, seize new opportunities, and contribute to the continued success of Indiana agriculture.
