Indiana Soil and Water Conservationists Unite in Indianapolis

By Andi Anderson

The Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (IASWCD) hosts its annual convention, drawing soil and water conservationists from across the state. Liz Rice, the Executive Director of IASWCD, underscores the pivotal role of networking in the state's conservation endeavors.

Bringing together individuals engaged in conservation efforts at local districts, including staff from soil and water conservation districts, NRCS partners, ISDA members, producers, and supervisors, the convention aims to foster networking opportunities and deepen collective understanding of conservation's scientific aspects and purpose.

"Our gathering allows individuals statewide to connect, learn, and elevate our grasp of conservation's essence and its significance," Rice emphasizes. "It reignites our commitment to our mission—ensuring conservation practices are embedded in our lands, respecting our natural endowments for future generations."

Highlighting the critical role of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs), Rice affirms their status as the primary defense for conservation efforts, particularly in Indiana.

"Indiana boasts exceptional cover crop usage and extensive no-till practices, reflecting our commitment to on-ground conservation efforts," Rice notes proudly. "Our local soil and water conservation districts serve as pillars, safeguarding our land, nurturing clean water sources, and fostering healthy soil for the prosperity of future generations."

Rice indicates a scheduled visit to the Statehouse on Tuesday morning, intending to express gratitude to Indiana legislators for their increased investment in Clean Water Indiana.

The convention stands as a testament to Indiana's dedication to conservation, uniting individuals committed to preserving the state's natural resources for the benefit of current and future generations.

This gathering reiterates the collective responsibility and commitment toward fostering a sustainable environment in Indiana, ensuring its natural legacy endures for years to come.
