Indiana state officials are warning motorists to be extra cautious on rural roads and highways as planting season approaches. With the warmer weather, large and slow-moving farm equipment will be a common sight on Indiana's roads. Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, emphasized the need for all drivers to remain alert and patient, especially when encountering large farm equipment moving between fields.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were three crashes involving farm equipment in Indiana in 2020, resulting in two fatalities. Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter is urging both farmers and motorists to remain patient, courteous, and attentive while on the road this spring.
To ensure the safety of all drivers, the following tips should be kept in mind when encountering large farm equipment:
Be patient and avoid tailgating
Do not pass in designated "No Passing Zones" or within 100 feet of intersections, railroad grade crossings, bridges, elevation structures, or tunnels
Be cautious when passing and ensure the farmer is not planning a left turn
Allow plenty of time to reach your destination and be aware of alternate routes
Avoid distractions while driving on rural roads with farm equipment
By keeping these tips in mind, motorists can help ensure a safe and successful planting season for all Indiana farmers.
