New Bill Supports Rural Farm Transport Systems

New Bill Supports Rural Farm Transport Systems

By Jamie Martin

The Fertilizer Institute has welcomed a proposed transportation bill designed to improve rural infrastructure in the United States. The bill, titled the BUILD America 250 Act, aims to strengthen agricultural supply chains and support farmers.

The legislation has bipartisan backing and focuses on improving roads, bridges, and freight corridors in rural areas. These transport systems are essential for moving fertilizers and agricultural goods safely and on time.

"A safe, efficient, and modern transportation network is essential to keeping fertilizer and other agricultural inputs moving to farms and getting agricultural products to market," said TFI president and CEO Corey Rosenbusch.

"This legislation recognizes that the roads, bridges, rail crossings, and freight corridors connecting rural America are essential to our nation's infrastructure and economic growth," said Rosenbusch.

The bill highlights the importance of local roads that connect farms to major highways. These routes often face issues such as poor conditions and weight restrictions, causing inefficiencies and higher costs.

Since all fertilizers are transported by truck at some point, and most agricultural goods rely on road transport, improving these routes is critical. Better infrastructure will improve delivery times and reduce pressure on supply chains.

The proposal also includes provisions from the VARIANCE Act. These allow limited flexibility in load weight for goods like fertilizer. This step supports safe and practical transportation.

In addition, the legislation proposes improvements in seasonal driver licensing rules to support agricultural workers during peak demand periods.

The bill also addresses funding by introducing fees for electric and hybrid vehicles, ensuring all road users contribute to maintenance costs.

Overall, the proposed legislation reflects a strong focus on rural infrastructure and highlights its importance for agriculture, logistics, and economic growth.
