Purdue Vet Students Support Professional Bull Care

By Andi Anderson

Students from the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine recently received a unique educational opportunity during a Professional Bull Riding (PBR) event held in Indianapolis.

The Ram Trucks PBR Indianapolis presented by Cooper Tires took place at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on March 21–22, during the same weekend as NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games across the country.

While basketball fans watched athletes on the court, Purdue veterinary students observed a different type of competition involving powerful bulls rather than mascots.

The event featured individual competition and team-based action through the PBR Monster Energy Team Challenge. Four Purdue veterinary students were given special behind-the-scenes access, allowing them to observe animal care practices in a high-intensity professional environment.

Students Connor Guest, Joe Lafiosca, Avery Hutchings, and Alex Hatch from the DVM Class of 2029 interacted with veterinarians responsible for maintaining animal health and safety during the event.

They also met stock contractors dedicated to raising and caring for the bulls. These interactions provided valuable insight into the real-world responsibilities of veterinarians working in livestock sports.

“Being on site for the PBR event allowed us to take our classroom knowledge to the ‘real world’” Guest said. “The two biggest topics we were able to both ask about as well as contribute to during discussions involved interstate movement of the bulls and animal welfare.”

Lafiosca highlighted another aspect of the experience, saying, “Being behind the chutes and talking to coordinators of PBR taught me the intricacies of every step in transporting and loading the bulls.”

Guest also expressed appreciation for the support shown by both Purdue and the PBR organizers.

He stated, “It also meant a lot that the folks at PBR were so welcoming and down to earth. They were very approachable and took time out of their hectic schedule to answer our questions and make sure we felt welcome. Thank you again to everyone who helped make this possible for us!”

The weekend became even more memorable as Purdue fans celebrated victories by the Purdue Boilermakers in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Between bull rides, cheers erupted as the team advanced to the Sweet 16.

Overall, the experience gave the students meaningful exposure to veterinary care in livestock industries, helping prepare them for future leadership roles in veterinary medicine and animal agriculture.
