Economist Reviews 2026 Prospective Plantings Outlook

By Andi Anderson

Indiana Farm Bureau’s Chief Economist recently shared insights on the 2026 Prospective Plantings report released by the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The report provides early estimates on how many acres farmers across the United States expect to plant this spring and offers important signals for agricultural markets.

According to the analysis, U.S. farmers plan to plant more soybean acres and reduce corn acres compared to last year.

This shift reflects changes in market conditions following a strong corn harvest in the previous season. Increased corn production rebuilt supplies and lowered prices, encouraging some growers to reconsider how they allocate their acres.

For Indiana specifically, farmers are expected to keep corn acreage unchanged while slightly increasing soybean plantings by about one percent. This balance suggests that Hoosier farmers are adjusting cautiously while keeping rotation plans largely consistent.

Indiana Farm Bureau Chief Economist Todd Davis explained the market signals behind these expectations, stating, “This data is right in line with what analysts predicted. Last year’s record corn crop rebuilt stocks and sent a market signal to reduce corn area,” said Davis. “Mother Nature will still have the final say of what farmers actually put in the ground this spring.”

Weather conditions remain a key unknown factor as planting season approaches. Excess rain, dryness, or delayed fieldwork could still change planting decisions, making early projections uncertain. Farmers often adjust plans quickly when conditions shift, which is why this report is considered an early indicator rather than a final decision.

Davis also emphasized that more clarity will come later in the season. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will release a follow up acreage report in June. This report is based on updated information and provides a clearer picture of what farmers actually planted across the country.

The Prospective Plantings report plays an important role in shaping market expectations, influencing commodity prices, and helping farmers farm suppliers and agribusinesses plan ahead. While early estimates are helpful, final acreage numbers depend on decisions made in the field.

Farmers are encouraged to monitor weather patterns and upcoming USDA reports closely as planting season continues.
