Indiana Farm Bureau Backs Federal Farm Equipment Reforms

By Andi Anderson

Indiana Farm Bureau has expressed support for recent federal regulatory and legislative actions aimed at reducing the burden of emissions requirements on farm machinery. These steps are seen as important for improving equipment reliability, lowering costs, and helping farmers operate more efficiently during the busy planting season.

Recent announcements from the federal government focus on reforming diesel exhaust fluid regulations for agricultural equipment. These changes were highlighted during a major national agriculture event and are expected to reduce equipment downtime related to sensor failures and complex emissions systems.

For farmers who depend on reliable machinery for timely fieldwork, such improvements can have a meaningful impact.

Indiana Farm Bureau President Randy Kron shared the organization’s position on these developments, stating:

“Indiana Farm Bureau appreciates the continued efforts of President Trump and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin to reform diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) regulations, including removing DEF sensor requirements for diesel equipment. This announcement, made during the Great American Agriculture Celebration at the White House, is expected to reduce equipment downtime, lower repair costs, and improve overall efficiency for farmers.”

In addition to federal regulatory changes, Indiana Farm Bureau also supports new legislation introduced in Congress.

Representative Victoria Spartz of Indiana introduced the Farm Equipment Safety Act, which seeks to exempt off-road farm equipment from certain emissions requirements. The goal of the bill is to address rising costs and maintenance challenges linked to modern emissions systems.

Kron added: “INFB also supports Rep. Victoria Spartz (IN-05) on her recently introduced H.R.7849, the Farm Equipment Safety Act. The legislation would exempt off-road farm equipment from burdensome emissions regulations, helping address cost and maintenance challenges associated with current system. As farmers prepare for the spring planting season amid continued tight margins, policies that support reliable and cost-effective equipment operation remain important.”

These actions are viewed as part of a broader effort to reduce regulatory pressure on agriculture while maintaining productivity.

“Together, these actions reflect a broader effort to address regulatory challenges impacting Hoosier farmers. Indiana Farm Bureau is happy to support these practical regulatory and legislative solutions that will help ensure our farmers can continue to efficiently produce the food, fuel, and fiber that support communities across Indiana and beyond.”

The Indiana Farm Bureau emphasized that dependable machinery remains essential for farmers facing narrow profit margins and tight seasonal timelines.
