Nominations Open for Indiana Master Farmer 2024

By Andi Anderson

The Indiana Prairie Farmer is currently welcoming nominations for the prestigious 2024 Master Farmer Award. Have a say in recognizing exceptional individuals whose stories will grace the pages of the July issue. But hurry—nominations must be submitted by February 16.

Curious about the nomination process? Here are answers to the top 10 questions about the Master Farmer program:

  • How to Nominate: Obtain a nomination form and gather essential details about the operation. Ask six individuals to provide supporting letters. Submit the nomination by Feb. 16 to tom.bechman@farmprogress.com or via mail to: 599 N., 100 W., Franklin, IN 46131.
  • Sponsors: The Master Farmer award is sponsored by Indiana Prairie Farmer and the Purdue College of Agriculture.
  • Recognition Count: Typically, four farmers are recognized annually, but this number may vary from three to five. Additionally, one to two Honorary Master Farmers may be acknowledged.
  • Notification: It's your call. Some prefer to keep it a surprise, while others inform the nominee in advance. Self-nominations are also accepted.
  • Recognition of Spouse: Your discretion. Some spouses appreciate being honored, while others might prefer a more private celebration. Regardless, both will appear in pictures.
  • Past Winners: Inquire with Extension staff or request a list of previous winners via email or mail.
  • Judges: A panel consisting of the Purdue ag dean, a former Master Farmer, and a Purdue professor adjudicate the nominations.
  • Judging Criteria: Judges evaluate farming achievements, environmental stewardship, leadership, and community involvement. No specific scoring system is used.
  • Confidentiality: Personal information like acres and livestock numbers are for assessment purposes only and won't be disclosed without authorization. Lenders are contacted only if financial concerns arise.
  • Honorary Master Farmers: This distinction is for individuals significantly contributing to Indiana agriculture without primarily earning from farming. Nominations aren't obligatory but are accepted. Nominate by sending a letter; the selection is made by Indiana Prairie Farmer staff in consultation with the judging committee.

Seize the opportunity to honor outstanding farmers in Indiana by submitting your nominations for the 2024 Master Farmer Award before the February 16 deadline.
