Purdue ABE graduate program tops U.S. rankings again

Purdue ABE graduate program tops U.S. rankings again

By Andi Anderson

Purdue University’s Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) Graduate Program has once again been recognized as the best in the nation, according to the 2025 U.S.

News & World Report Rankings. This marks the thirteenth consecutive year that ABE has secured a position within the top two, a testament to the program's enduring excellence and innovation.

Glenn W. Sample, Dean of Agriculture at Purdue and also a professor in the ABE department, credits this consistent success to the department's global impact through key research areas and student engagement.

“ABE achieves this ranking because the faculty and staff focus on making a global impact in key areas of research and preparing and working with our students to take that impact to the next level,” he stated.

The program’s leadership under Nate Mosier, the department head and the Indiana Soybean Alliance Soybean Utilized Endowed Chair, has been pivotal. Mosier's own research focuses on bioprocessing and the conversion of renewable resources into fuels, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

“I believe our department earned this honor for many reasons. It is through the outstanding work of our graduate students, mentoring of our faculty and support of our staff that we have stayed at the top for so long,” Mosier remarked.

Arvind Raman, the John A. Edwardson Dean of the College of Engineering, also highlighted the adaptability of the ABE department to evolving technological advances such as synthetic biology, the Internet of Things (IoT), automation, and artificial intelligence.

He said, “The No. 1 ranking also acknowledges the department’s commitment to growth."

Purdue's ABE department emphasizes a broad array of research areas that align with its academic programs.

These include agricultural systems management, biological and bioprocess engineering, data science and digital applications, environmental and natural resource engineering, and machine systems engineering.

This ranking serves as a recognition of Purdue ABE’s historical contributions to the field and as a benchmark for its ongoing commitment to leading agricultural and biological engineering into the future.
