Students from Purdue University’s Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture recently explored the southern Indiana green industry through a hands-on educational tour.
On September 20, 2025, students enrolled in the Field Production of Horticultural Crops and Landscape Contracting and Management classes spent a day visiting several major horticultural sites to learn about real-world operations.
The field trip included visits to Bethany Community Gardens in Indianapolis, Southern View Nursery in Arlington, Schneider Nursery in Seymour, and The Rejoicing Vine in Indianapolis.
At each location, students were introduced to different aspects of horticultural production, sustainable management practices, and landscape design.
At Bethany Community Gardens, students learned about community involvement in sustainable food systems. Southern View Nursery and Schneider Nursery provided insights into large-scale nursery management, plant propagation, and operational history.
The final stop, The Rejoicing Vine, showcased vineyard management, regenerative agriculture, and the integration of agritourism into horticultural business models.
The day-long experience offered students a chance to see the diversity of careers available in horticulture, from nursery operations to landscape contracting and vineyard management.
By linking academic concepts to practical applications, the tour helped students understand how sustainability and innovation drive modern horticultural practices.
This field trip highlights Purdue’s continued dedication to experiential learning. The Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture ensures that students gain the skills and exposure needed to succeed in the expanding green industry across Indiana and beyond.
