Farmers and landowners interested in solar energy development will have an opportunity to learn key legal and planning considerations during an upcoming online webinar titled Solar on Your Farm Key Insights Before You Sign.
The session is designed to support informed decision making as renewable energy projects continue to expand across agricultural land.
The webinar will feature Brianna Schroeder of Janzen Schroeder Ag Law, who will explain important legal issues farmers should understand before entering into solar agreements.
Her presentation will focus on protecting landowner rights while navigating a changing agricultural and energy landscape.
One major topic will be solar leases. Farmers will learn what terms to review carefully, which clauses may carry long term risk, and how to avoid common pitfalls. Understanding lease language is critical, as solar agreements often last for decades and can affect future land use, property value, and farm operations.
The webinar will also explain the permitting process. Participants will gain insight into the steps required before a solar project can move forward, including approvals, timelines, and responsibilities. This information can help farmers prepare early and avoid unexpected delays or challenges.
Another key area of discussion will be co- petition participation. The session will outline what it means to be part of a co- petition, what landowners can expect during the process, and how it may affect neighbors and the wider community. These insights are especially important for farmers considering large scale or shared solar developments.
The webinar is part of the R STEP education effort and is hosted online on March 6, 2026, from 10:30 PM to 12 AM IST. It is organized through the College of Agriculture Extension within the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources.
Registration is required to attend. Farmers, landowners, and agricultural professionals are encouraged to participate to better understand how solar projects may affect their land and long-term goals. For more information, participants may contact Tamara Ogle at Purdue University.
Overall, the webinar offers practical guidance to help farmers protect their interests while exploring renewable energy opportunities on their farms.
