The United Nations has officially announced 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer. This global recognition highlights the valuable contributions of women in agriculture and agribusiness. Women farmers support food production, protect rural economies, and help communities grow.
In the United States, the American Farm Bureau Federation and several partner organizations are working together to raise awareness of this special year. An online information hub will provide learning materials, success stories, and helpful tools designed to support women involved in farming and agribusiness.
“Farm and ranch women contribute so much to our society, from rural communities to big cities all across the globe,” said Isabella Chism, an Indiana row crop farmer and chair of AFBF’s Women’s Leadership Committee. “We’re delighted to work together with a variety of partners across the agricultural industry to honor those contributions, cultivate learning opportunities and empower women farmers around the world. The International Year of the Woman Farmer is an opportunity to celebrate and elevate the work of women farmers everywhere.”
One of the major events planned is the ACE Summit, which stands for Advocate, Cultivate, and Empower. The summit will be held in Washington, D.C., from June 1 to June 3. Women farmers, ranchers, and agribusiness leaders will attend leadership sessions, networking programs, and advocacy training. These programs aim to build confidence, improve skills, and encourage women to take active roles in agricultural leadership.
The Women in Ag Survey is another key part of this initiative. The survey is open until the end of March and collects information about women’s involvement in agriculture. It studies challenges, opportunities, and areas where more support is needed. Women aged 18 and above from the United States and Puerto Rico who are involved or interested in agriculture are invited to participate.
Survey results will be used to improve training programs, expand access to resources, and create better opportunities for women in agriculture.
The International Year of the Woman Farmer encourages equal participation, stronger leadership, and long-term growth in farming communities. This initiative supports women who help shape the future of agriculture across the world.
