The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced funding for four key projects in Indiana aimed at improving access to clean energy systems and increasing the use of domestic biofuels. The USDA is allocating $9.13 million through two programs: the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) and the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program (HBIIP). This funding is supported by President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act.
“This is a significant step forward in empowering our Hoosier communities. It reflects our commitment to enhancing energy independence and fostering economic growth through innovative, sustainable practices,” said Curtis Johnson, acting state director for USDA Rural Development Indiana.
Over $130,000 in REAP grants will support projects in LaGrange and Wabash counties, enabling farmers and small businesses to adopt energy-efficient systems and renewable energy solutions.
Key initiatives include:
- Alvin M. and Elsie Miller LLP: A $20,000 grant will help install a solar energy system, reducing annual energy costs by $17,537 and replacing 444,200 kilowatt-hours annually.
- Schlemmer Brothers Metalworks Inc: A $110,317 grant will fund solar array installation, saving $21,308 in energy costs and replacing 174,252 kilowatt-hours annually.
Additionally, nearly $9 million from HBIIP grants will assist business owners in expanding access to biofuels by upgrading fueling infrastructure. Significant projects include:
- JT Petroleum LLC: A $5 million grant will install dispensers and storage tanks, increasing renewable fuel sales by over 6 million gallons annually.
- Buckeye Terminals LLC: Nearly $4 million will fund upgrades for biodiesel blending and storage, boosting biodiesel sales by 123 million gallons annually.
“We believe that by investing in clean energy and homegrown biofuels, we are not only addressing climate impacts but also creating meaningful job opportunities that can transform lives in rural Indiana,” said Johnson.
These investments reflect the USDA's commitment to supporting clean energy adoption and strengthening the biofuel industry in rural America. For further details, visit rd.usda.gov.
