Indiana Port Gets South Shore Sustainability Award

At its annual conference and expo, South Shore Clean Cities (SSCC) presented Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor the 2019 Sustainability Leadership Award for showing extraordinary leadership in making strides to the sustainable transportation and/or energy sectors.
"We are extremely honored to receive this award from a community partner that works to facilitate clean technology in the region," said Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor Director Ian Hirt. "We are committed to regularly reviewing the environmental impacts of our facilities and services to make sure the greenest form of transportation becomes even greener."
The Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor and South Shore Clean Cities have worked closely to reduce diesel emissions throughout the port. Current sustainable transportation projects at the port include construction of a trucker lounge and paved truck marshalling yard with parking for 135 trucks. Additionally, two tenants of the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor received more than $1.1 million in grants to provide 10 clean fuel vehicles and an electric railcar mover.
Port officials received the award on Feb. 25 at the Blue Chip Stardust Event Center in Michigan City, Indiana. Attendees also celebrated the successes of SSCC members in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and gasoline gallon equivalents. SSCC presented the 2019 Sustainability Leadership Award to the Ports of Indiana's General Counsel Andrea Hermer.
The day-long conference featured several sessions on alternative fuel options and emissions-reducing projects for government fleets, school buses, and electric charging infrastructure.
SSCC is a nonprofit, member-based coalition dedicated to promoting sustainable transportation in Northern Indiana. The programs supported by South Shore Clean Cities and its members support domestic fuels, strengthen the nation's energy security, reduce dependence on imported oil, improve air quality and support local jobs and the local economy.
Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor is a 10-year member of South Shore Clean Cities.
The Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor opened in 1970 and is operated by Ports of Indiana, a statewide port authority operating three ports on the Ohio River and Lake Michigan. Established in 1961, the Ports of Indiana is a self-funded enterprise dedicated to growing Indiana's economy by developing and maintaining a world-class port system.
