The Melon Tasting and Field Day is an educational event organized at the Purdue Extension Food Safety Training Hub in Vincennes, Indiana. It brings together growers, buyers, researchers, and agricultural professionals to explore advancements in melon production and food safety practices.
The event will take place on July 28, 2026, at Purdue Extension Food Safety Training Hub, 4207 Purdue Rd, Vincennes, IN 47591.
The event begins with registration and networking from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m., giving participants an opportunity to connect and interact. This is followed by a welcome session from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m., where hosts introduce the program and outline the day’s activities.
From 10:00 to 10:45 a.m., attendees participate in introductions of growers, buyers, and seed company representatives. This session also includes a melon and watermelon tasting activity, allowing participants to experience different varieties. Wenjing Guan, a speaker at the event, presents insights on diverse melon and watermelon cultivars, helping attendees understand the importance of variety selection in farming.
The program continues with a field tour from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m., where participants visit research plots. This tour provides practical knowledge about crop management, growth practices, and ongoing research in melon and watermelon cultivation.
Lunch and informal networking take place from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., offering a relaxed environment for participants to share ideas and experiences. Such interactions help strengthen collaboration within the farming community.
The final session, held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., includes a tour of the Purdue Food Safety Training Hub led by Scott Monroe. This session focuses on food safety practices and facilities, emphasizing the importance of maintaining quality and safety in agricultural production.
