Keep Pastures Productive, Maximize Fencing and Grazing
Indiana Ag Connection - 01/11/2018

Purdue University Extension and University of Illinois Extension are collaborating to offer a Pasture Management workshop, being held in the Oak Room at The Beef House Restaurant at 16501 Indiana State Road 63, Covington, Ind., on Feb. 8. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. EST (4:30 p.m. CST), and the presenters will begin at 7 p.m. EST, following a Beef House dinner.

Topics of this workshop will include "Keeping Your Pastures Productive" and "Fencing, Water, & Grazing Systems Supplies."

Keeping permanent pastures productive requires an assessment of what management components need improvement so that yield, quality and persistence are not compromised. In "Keeping Your Pastures Productive," Purdue Forage Specialist Keith Johnson will share how to keep pastures productive and the steps necessary to renovate pastures needing improvement. Discussion will occur about the establishment of perennial warm-season grasses, like big bluestem and Indian grass, and where they might be considered a part of a grazing management system.

In "Fencing, Water, & Grazing Systems Supplies," Susannah Hinds, Grazing Land Specialist at NRCS, will discuss the planning considerations for creating a fencing and watering system plan to increase utilization efficiency of existing forage. Hinds will also present specific examples of equipment and supplies that can be utilized.

The cost for the program is $20, which includes dinner, payable online or at the door. Pre-register by Feb. 2 calling 765-492-5335 or online at go.illinois.edu/BiState.

Purdue University Extension and University of Illinois Extension provide equal opportunities in programs and employment. If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in this program, please contact your local Extension Office.
