Indiana Winter Wheat Seedings Up 33 Percent

Indiana winter wheat seeded area for 2021 is estimated at 400,000 acres, an increase of 33 percent from last year, according to the USDA NASS, Great Lakes Regional Field Office. Winter wheat planting progress remained at or ahead of schedule throughout the fall season.

Crop emergence was off to a slow start due to dry conditions but caught up to the five-year average after several late-October rain events. The crop condition was rated 64 percent good to excellent as of November 29, compared with 48 percent during the same time last year.

U.S. winter wheat planted area for harvest in 2021 is estimated at 32.0 million acres, up 5 percent from 2020 and up 2 percent from 2019. This represents the fourth lowest United States acreage on record. Seeding of the 2021 acreage was underway in early-September and was ahead of the 5-year average pace. Throughout the season, planting and emergence progress remained ahead of the 5-year average pace. Seeding was mostly complete by November 15, 2020.
