Farmers and agricultural enthusiasts will have the opportunity to explore the potential of broomcorn during a special educational field day focused on organic farming and sustainable crop production. The event will highlight how broomcorn can serve as a valuable crop for producers looking to transition their land to organic systems.
Broomcorn is a unique variety of Sorghum bicolor that is traditionally used in broom-making and various craft products. In recent years, interest in this crop has grown because of its potential to provide additional income opportunities while supporting sustainable farming practices.
Its increasing demand in artisan and craft markets has made it an attractive option for small-scale producers.
The field day, titled "A Clean Sweep: Broomcorn for Organic Transition," will be organized through a collaborative effort involving Purdue Extension, the Indiana Organic Network, and the team at Bundle Sticks Farm.
The program will provide participants with practical knowledge about broomcorn cultivation, management practices, and its role in organic agriculture.
Attendees will learn how broomcorn can fit into crop rotations and support the transition from conventional to organic farming systems. Experts and experienced growers will discuss production techniques, management considerations, and the benefits of including alternative crops in diversified farming operations.
Participants will also gain insight into how broomcorn contributes to domestic supply chains that support handcrafted products and traditional industries.
The event is particularly valuable for small-scale farmers, individuals considering organic certification, and crafters interested in agricultural products used in artisan manufacturing.
Through hands-on demonstrations and discussions, attendees will be able to better understand the relationship between agriculture, sustainability, and rural entrepreneurship.
The program will take place on August 10, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. ET, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event will be hosted at Bundle Sticks Farm, 7601 Hess Jawtak Rd NE, Lanesville, Indiana 47136. In case of unfavorable weather, a rain date has been scheduled for August 17, 2026.
Registration is required for participation. The program is supported by organizations committed to promoting sustainable agriculture and helping farmers adopt environmentally responsible production practices.
