Indiana Awards 1.3 Million for Soil and Water Conservation

By Andi Anderson

The Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) and the Indiana State Soil Conservation Board (SSCB) have awarded over $1.3 million in Clean Water Indiana grants to support soil and water conservation efforts across the state.

A total of 16 conservation districts and one organization received funding to assist farmers in improving water quality and implementing conservation practices.

Jefferson County SWCD received $130,000 to promote soil health on pasture and hay land while improving water quality.

The funds will support conservation practices to reduce soil erosion, enhance forage quality, and limit nutrient runoff. An additional $30,650 was awarded to the county for purchasing a no-till drill to help landowners improve soil and water resources.

Jennings County SWCD secured $50,000 in partnership with Ripley County SWCD. The funds will provide cost-sharing opportunities for private landowners to implement cover crops, forage planting, and heavy-use area protection.

Lt. Gov. Beckwith emphasized the program’s importance in helping farmers improve water quality across the state. “This program touches every corner of Indiana and ensures we remain a leader in soil conservation,” she stated.

Districts can use the grants for staffing, technical assistance, and incentive programs. Clean Water Indiana, funded by the state's cigarette tax, requires grantees to provide matching funds.

Staffing projects require a 25% match, while other projects must meet a 50% match. Many conservation districts will focus on helping producers not currently served by other programs.

These grants will play a key role in expanding conservation efforts, ensuring Indiana’s farmlands remain productive while protecting water resources.
