Indiana Farmers Gain Edge in Water Management

By Andi Anderson

Farmers in Northwest Indiana will have an opportunity to strengthen their irrigation and water management knowledge during the LaPorte County Great Lakes Irrigation Workshop scheduled for February 24, 2026.

The event is organized through Purdue Extension and is designed to support practical decision making for crop production and environmental stewardship.

The workshop will take place at the LaPorte County Fairgrounds in LaPorte, Indiana. Registration and welcome begin at 8:30 a.m. CST, with the main program running from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. CST.

The event is offered in the Northwest District and is open to farmers, applicators, and agricultural professionals interested in irrigation and crop water use.

Participants will receive training on several important topics related to modern irrigation practices. These include irrigation scheduling, soil moisture monitoring, and the use of diagnostic guides to support informed field decisions.

Sessions will also focus on high yield practices and the proper methods for irrigating with pesticides and fertilizers to protect crops and water resources.

In addition, the program will address significant water use considerations and provide an overview of the 2026 Environmental Stewardship and regulatory topic.

These discussions are intended to help producers understand compliance requirements while managing water efficiently and responsibly.

The registration fee is $20, with an additional $10 required for those seeking PARP credit. Online registration is available, and participants are encouraged to register in advance. The program time is listed in Central Daylight Time, with details also shared for online reference.

Educational leadership and coordination for the event are provided by Jesi Davenport, an ANR Educator with Purdue Extension. Jesi Davenport will also serve as the main contact for questions related to the workshop, registration, or program details.

This irrigation workshop is part of Purdue Extension’s broader mission to deliver practical, research-based education to Indiana’s agricultural community.

By attending, participants can gain updated knowledge, earn required credits, and build confidence in managing water resources effectively while supporting crop productivity and long-term sustainability.
