Indiana’s Evers Family Wins Award for Rural Preservation

Indiana’s Evers Family Wins Award for Rural Preservation

The Evers family of Wolcottville in Noble County, Indiana, has been honored with the prestigious 2023 John Arnold Award for Rural Preservation by Indiana Landmarks and Indiana Farm Bureau. The award acknowledges the efforts of seven generations of the family in maintaining and operating their historic farmstead.

Established in 1854 by three brothers, the farm initially cultivated corn, oats, wheat, and soybeans. Today, hay serves as the primary cash crop. The farm boasts an impressive brick house and barn, with the house built by Frank Myers, son of one of the founders. Completed in 1923, the house is a showpiece, featuring hardwood floors, leaded windows, sterling silver chandeliers, and a third-floor ballroom with a piano that was lifted in through an upper window during construction.

Frank's great-grandson, Frank Evers, and his wife Evelyn, along with their family, continue to maintain the farm. Over the years, they have preserved the original house's charm while also operating a working farm. The family has hosted various gatherings in the ballroom, and nearby, the magnificent brick barn with a fieldstone foundation adds to the farm's picturesque landscape.

Even with changes in agricultural operations, the Evers family has retained a deep appreciation for the land's heritage and preserved its historical significance. Their commitment to sustainable farming practices and respect for the land has earned them the well-deserved John Arnold Award.
