Jay Akridge wins 2024 Hovde award

By Andi Anderson

Jay Akridge, a professor of agricultural economics at Purdue University, was awarded the 2024 Frederick L. Hovde Award of Excellence in Educational Service to Rural People of Indiana.

This prestigious recognition highlights his exceptional contributions to education and service for rural communities.

The Hovde Award, sponsored annually by Indiana Farm Bureau, honors individuals who excel in educational service for rural Indiana. Akridge accepted the award at the Indiana Farm Bureau state convention held on December 13 in French Lick, Indiana.

Akridge’s journey at Purdue spans over 42 years, beginning with earning his master's and PhD in agricultural economics.

Throughout his career, he has taken on multiple roles, including professor, interim vice provost of engagement, dean of the College of Agriculture, provost, executive vice president for academic affairs and diversity, and his current position as trustee chair in teaching and learning excellence.

His contributions have left a lasting impact on Purdue’s agricultural programs and rural education initiatives. Akridge expressed gratitude for this recognition, stating, “During my 42-plus years at Purdue, nothing has been more professionally fulfilling to me than working with our faculty, staff, and students — and committed partners such as Indiana Farm Bureau — in service of rural Indiana. To be recognized for this work with the 2024 Hovde Award of Excellence is both an honor and truly humbling — especially since any contribution I made involved the efforts of so many.”

This award serves as a testament to Akridge’s lifelong dedication to empowering rural communities through education and his enduring legacy at Purdue University.
