John Thune's win boosts biofuels sector

John Thune's win boosts biofuels sector

By Jamie Martin

The recent election of Republican Senator John Thune as Senate majority leader is heralded as a positive development for the biofuels industry in the United States.

Thune, who represents South Dakota, has been a staunch supporter of biofuels like ethanol throughout his 19 years in the Senate.

His leadership is expected to continue and expand legislative support for renewable fuels. This is significant, as Thune has actively championed ethanol and other renewable resources, advocating for policies that enhance energy security, bolster rural economies, and reduce emissions.

Thune has been instrumental in pushing for policies that promote sustainable energy solutions. Notably, he has supported the Renewable Fuel Standard and worked to expand access to higher ethanol blends such as E15 and E85. His legislative efforts also include advocating for the permanent allowance of year-round national E15 sales and addressing greenhouse gas emissions reductions credited to ethanol use.

The biofuels industry, represented by voices like Growth Energy and the Renewable Fuels Association, views Thune's leadership as a pivotal factor for future growth and innovation in renewable fuels. They anticipate that his role will help navigate the challenges and opportunities facing America’s renewable fuel sector.

His election as majority leader is expected to bolster ongoing efforts to enhance the biofuels landscape, ensuring that sustainable energy practices are a priority in national policy discussions.

With Thune at the helm, the industry looks forward to a robust advocacy for biofuels that supports both the environment and the economy.
