Farmers and agricultural professionals in Indiana will have an opportunity to expand their knowledge of manure management practices at the Steuben County Manure Management Workshop. The educational event is designed to provide participants with important information about nutrient management, regulatory updates, environmental stewardship, and effective farm recordkeeping.
The workshop will be held on September 16, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST at Stoy Farms in Ashley, Indiana. The event is part of the East District educational program and is intended to help producers stay informed about current industry requirements and best management practices.
A major focus of the workshop will be manure management planning. Participants will learn about the role of nutrients in crop production and how proper manure application can improve soil health while supporting farm productivity. Discussions will also cover application timing, an important factor in maximizing nutrient benefits and reducing environmental risks.
Storage management will be another key topic during the program. Experts will discuss strategies that can help farmers properly store manure and maintain compliance with regulations. Accurate recordkeeping practices will also be highlighted, as well-maintained records can support farm management decisions and demonstrate regulatory compliance.
The workshop will provide guidance on spill prevention and response procedures. Understanding how to handle potential manure spills is critical for protecting water quality and maintaining positive relationships with local communities. Participants will gain practical insights into minimizing risks and responding effectively when issues arise.
Attendees will also receive updates on agricultural regulations affecting manure management. The program includes a review of current regulations and a discussion of the 2026 ESA Regulatory Update. These sessions are designed to help producers understand changing requirements and prepare for future compliance needs.
An additional highlight of the event will be a panel discussion focused on developing positive relationships with the public. Building trust and maintaining open communication with community members are becoming increasingly important aspects of modern agriculture. The discussion will explore ways farmers can engage with the public and share information about responsible farming practices.
The workshop is expected to offer valuable networking opportunities for producers, industry representatives, and agricultural professionals. By bringing together individuals from different areas of agriculture, the event encourages the exchange of ideas and experiences that can benefit farming operations.
Following the educational sessions, participants are invited to attend a dinner and open house beginning at 5:00 p.m. The gathering will provide additional opportunities for discussion and relationship building within the agricultural community.
The event is being coordinated by Elysia Rodgers, ANR Educator, who serves as the contact person for the program. Through expert presentations and interactive discussions, the workshop aims to provide practical information that supports efficient, responsible, and sustainable manure management practices for farmers across the region.
