Dr. Ted Cable, recipient of Purdue Forestry and Natural Resources’ 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award, has spent decades helping people develop a deeper appreciation for nature and the world around them. Throughout his career as an educator, researcher, author, and mentor, he has encouraged individuals to discover value and beauty in places, wildlife, and experiences that are often overlooked.
As Aldo Leopold once said, "Our ability to perceive quality in nature begins, as in art, with the pretty. It expands through successive stages of the beautiful to values as yet uncaptured by language." This philosophy reflects Dr. Cable’s lifelong commitment to helping people understand and appreciate nature on a deeper level.
A native of Lansing, Illinois, Dr. Ted Cable earned his master's degree in wildlife ecology from Purdue University in 1980 and completed his PhD in forest recreation management in 1984. During a career spanning nearly 35 years at Kansas State University, he served as both a professor and administrator while making significant contributions to environmental education and natural resource interpretation.
Dr. Cable has written 15 books and published more than 250 articles covering subjects such as nature interpretation, birdwatching, travel, and conservation. His work has influenced educators, park professionals, and nature enthusiasts across the globe. He also contributed to the design and development of interpretive trails in local, state, and national parks and provided training to travel and tour guides in heritage interpretation.
Reflecting on the impact of nature education, Dr. Cable shared an inspiring story about a young boy who discovered a cave during a nature hike. Speaking about the experience, he said:
“As interpreters and naturalists, people working at a nature center, state park, national park or wildlife refuge, we have the opportunity to change lives, sometimes by the busload.”
He further explained how simple experiences can have lasting effects on young minds. According to Dr. Cable, helping people make meaningful discoveries can create lifelong memories and inspire confidence and curiosity.
Throughout his career, Dr. Cable has worked with communities and organizations around the world, extending his influence far beyond the classroom. His efforts have helped strengthen environmental awareness, improve interpretation programs, and encourage stronger connections between people and nature.
His remarkable achievements have been recognized through several prestigious honors. In 2020, he received the Legend Award from the American Academy of Park and Recreation Administrators. He has also been recognized by organizations including the National Association for Interpretation, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Kansas Wildlife Society, and the Association of Missouri Interpreters.
When discussing awards, Dr. Cable remained humble and grateful. He said, “I don’t know what to say about awards; I don’t really feel worthy.” Speaking about Purdue Forestry and Natural Resources’ Lifetime Achievement Award, he expressed appreciation for the university that helped shape his personal and professional growth.
Dr. Cable credited mentors including Dr. Russ Mumford, Dr. Mickey Weeks, Dr. Doug Knudson, and Dr. Joe O’Leary for guiding him during his time at Purdue University. Their support helped him develop into a respected professional who would later impact thousands of students, educators, and conservation professionals.
Through his dedication to education, research, writing, and public engagement, Dr. Ted Cable has left a lasting legacy. His work continues to inspire people to appreciate nature, discover new perspectives, and understand the importance of meaningful connections with the world around them.
