New Mountain™ Herbicide Targets Wheat Weeds

New Mountain™ Herbicide Targets Wheat Weeds

By Jamie Martin

A new herbicide is set to provide wheat growers with another tool for managing weeds while improving application efficiency. Mountain™ herbicide has been developed to deliver dependable control of both grass and broadleaf weeds in wheat production systems while addressing common handling and mixing concerns.

Designed for use in spring and winter wheat, Mountain™ is a Group 2 herbicide that incorporates proven flucarbazone-sodium technology. The product was created to combine weed control performance with practical features that support easier use in the field.

Weed pressure remains a significant challenge for wheat growers across many production regions. Uncontrolled weeds compete with crops for water, nutrients, and sunlight, reducing productivity and profitability. Effective herbicides continue to play an important role in protecting yield potential and maintaining crop quality.

Mountain™ controls many of the important grass weeds found in wheat fields, including wild oat, foxtails, barnyard grass, bromes, and Italian ryegrass. In addition to grassy weeds, the herbicide also controls several broadleaf weed species that can negatively affect crop development.

The product offers a broad application window, enabling growers to make treatments from the one-leaf crop stage through 60 days before harvesting. This flexibility can help producers respond to changing field conditions and seasonal management requirements.

Nufarm says a major focus during product development was improving handling characteristics. Many growers and applicators encounter challenges when mixing or storing herbicide products. Mountain™ was formulated to improve dispersion and solubility, helping users create more consistent spray mixtures while reducing preparation difficulties.

The herbicide also offers compatibility with many commonly used broadleaf herbicides. This allows producers to build effective tank-mix programs that target multiple weed species while supporting efficient field operations.

Cold-weather storage can sometimes affect product flowability and handling. Mountain™ was designed to maintain reliable performance after storage in lower temperatures, helping ensure product consistency when growers are preparing seasonal applications.

Industry innovation continues to focus on providing farmers with products that improve both crop protection and operational efficiency. Modern farming operations increasingly rely on technologies that reduce complexity while maintaining strong field performance. Herbicides that combine reliable weed control with improved user experience are becoming more valuable in today's production systems.

“Mountain™ represents a meaningful advancement in formulation technology for wheat growers,” said Jeff Wagner, VP of Sales, Crop Protection at Nufarm. “Growers need products that not only provide proven weed control but also make applications more efficient. Mountain™ delivers the performance expected from flucarbazone while offering an improved distribution and user experience.”

Mountain™ strengthens the range of crop protection solutions available for cereal crop production. By combining proven active ingredients with formulation improvements, the product seeks to help farmers maximize productivity while simplifying application processes.

The herbicide is scheduled for availability ahead of the spring 2027 season. Registrations have already been secured in multiple wheat-producing states, including Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Additional state registrations are expected in the future.

As wheat producers continue searching for practical and effective weed management solutions, products such as Mountain™ are expected to support better field performance, improved application experiences, and stronger crop management outcomes throughout the growing season.
