Purdue Workshop Focuses on Grain Storage and Pest Management

Purdue Workshop Focuses on Grain Storage and Pest Management

By Andi Anderson

Agricultural professionals involved in grain storage and post-harvest management will have an opportunity to strengthen their knowledge and skills through the 2026 Grain Post-Harvest & Recertification Workshop. The educational event is designed to support farmers, grain storage operators, pest management professionals, and food processing quality-control managers in improving grain handling practices after harvest.

The workshop is scheduled for December 10, 2026, at the Beck Agricultural Center. Participants will receive practical information aimed at addressing common challenges associated with grain storage and post-harvest systems. Proper post-harvest management is essential for maintaining grain quality, reducing losses, and ensuring stored grain remains protected from insects and other pests.

One of the main objectives of the program is to help attendees better understand pest risks that can occur during grain storage. Participants will learn how to identify potential pest problems early and select suitable control measures before infestations become severe. Effective pest control helps protect grain quality, improve storage efficiency, and reduce economic losses.

The workshop will also highlight the importance of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). This approach combines prevention, monitoring, and targeted control methods to manage pests safely and effectively. By adopting integrated strategies, agricultural professionals can improve long-term storage outcomes while reducing unnecessary pesticide use.

In addition to pest management training, the event will provide guidance on maintaining efficient post-harvest systems. Experts will discuss best practices for grain storage, monitoring techniques, and management strategies that can help preserve harvested crops throughout the storage period.

The program is also beneficial for certified agricultural advisers. The workshop will serve as an opportunity for Indiana-certified advisers to earn applied-for Continuing Certification Hours (CCH) credits, helping them meet professional development requirements while expanding their industry knowledge.

Registration for the workshop is available at a fee of $140. The event is organized through Purdue University and its agricultural education and extension programs, reflecting the institution's commitment to supporting the farming community through research-based training and outreach activities.

Agricultural stakeholders seeking to improve grain storage management, strengthen pest-control practices, and stay updated on industry recommendations may find this workshop valuable. Through expert instruction and practical learning opportunities, participants can gain knowledge that supports efficient grain storage, improved crop protection, and stronger post-harvest management outcomes.
