Frank Hayes earns 2024 golden hoosier recognition

By Andi Anderson

Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch recently announced the 17 winners of the 2024 Golden Hoosier Award, an annual recognition of senior Hoosiers who have dedicated their lives to community service.

Established in 2008, the Golden Hoosier Award celebrates individuals aged 65 and older who have made significant contributions to their communities through volunteering. Since its inception, the award has honored over 200 Hoosiers for their generosity and commitment to helping others.

Among this year’s recipients is Frank T. Hayes of Madison, a local hero known for his unwavering positivity and dedication to his community. Frank has been a beloved presence in Madison, frequently engaging with visitors and educating them about the town’s rich history and the 144 blocks of its historic districts.

His passion for community outreach is evident in his support of The Children’s Advocacy Center of Southeastern Indiana, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting child abuse victims.

Frank’s generosity extends beyond financial support; he actively restocks the children’s resource room with essentials such as snacks, hygiene products, backpacks, and toys. He also provides lunches and raises awareness about the importance of supporting the Center.

Frank’s involvement doesn’t stop there—he participates in annual fundraising campaigns, further demonstrating his commitment to the cause.

Throughout his lifetime, Frank has received several honors, including the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash and the title of King of The Children’s Advocacy Center.

As a Madison Main Street Ambassador, he was named Grand Marshal of the local parade and was presented with the key to the city in 2022. Frank has also co-authored “We Served with Honor,” a book chronicling the history of the 91st Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, showcasing his dedication to preserving military history.

Beyond his community work, Frank’s professional accomplishments are equally impressive. He served in the U.S. Air Force in strategic command, worked on the Space Station, and excelled as an engineer and pilot instructor.

Now approaching his 93rd birthday, Frank continues to inspire those around him with his infectious positivity, active lifestyle, and dedication to making every moment count.

Frank Hayes exemplifies the true spirit of the Golden Hoosier Award, embodying a lifelong commitment to serving others and improving his community. His contributions have left a lasting impact on Madison and continue to inspire future generations to give back.
