Indiana agriculture organizations and businesses are calling for the swift confirmation of Brooke Rollins as the next U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. Over 400 organizations signed a letter urging Senate leaders to act promptly.
Support from Indiana Groups
Prominent Indiana groups like the Indiana Soybean Alliance, Indiana Corn Growers Association, and Indiana Farm Bureau have joined the effort. Additionally, major organizations like the Agribusiness Council of Indiana and the Indiana Ethanol Producers Association signed the letter.
National organizations with Indiana connections, such as the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) and the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, also backed Rollins.
Key Challenges to Address
The letter highlights the critical need for Rollins’ leadership. It states that U.S. agriculture faces numerous difficulties, including the need for a new farm bill, economic stabilization, and support across the entire food and agriculture value chain. The letter emphasizes Rollins’ ability to ensure America’s agriculture remains a global leader in producing secure, affordable, and nutritious food.
Nomination Delays
Rollins was scheduled for a confirmation hearing on January 15 before the Senate Agriculture Committee. However, delays in FBI background checks and ethics disclosures postponed the hearing, with no new date announced.
Indiana groups believe Rollins’ confirmation is essential to addressing the challenges of rural and agricultural sectors. The letter calls for the Senate to act quickly, enabling Rollins to provide the leadership needed for a sustainable future in agriculture.
Her confirmation is viewed as a vital step in securing strong leadership at the USDA to navigate the current agricultural landscape.
