Indiana lawmakers are working on a new initiative to simplify how farmers access essential resources. A proposed bill would create an online portal to serve as a one-stop-shop for agricultural producers to find government information, permits, and funding opportunities.
The bill, HB 1149, recently passed a Senate committee with unanimous support. If approved, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) will develop and manage the portal, ensuring farmers can efficiently navigate the various state and federal requirements.
Longtime dairy farmer Mike Hoopengardner shared his experience, recalling how he and his wife had to register with multiple agencies and obtain numerous certifications when they started farming.
He emphasized that the online portal would have significantly reduced the time and effort required for these processes.
The portal is expected to provide farmers with clear guidance on state and federal funding opportunities, regulatory requirements, and essential certifications. According to Quinton Hayes from ISDA, the department also plans to launch awareness campaigns in newspapers and public forums to inform farmers about the new resource.
The bill is now moving through the final stages of approval and could soon reach the governor’s desk. If signed into law, the online portal will help farmers save time, streamline administrative tasks, and improve access to crucial agricultural resources.
