Indiana Pork is on a mission to inspire the next generation of agricultural leaders by engaging youth and fostering interest in rewarding careers within the pork industry. Through strategic outreach efforts and interactive events, such as the recent gathering held at the Jasper County Fairgrounds, Indiana Pork is connecting with young minds and igniting their passion for agriculture.
The initiative to engage youth stems from qualitative research conducted in early 2023, which highlighted the importance of reaching talent at a younger age and building a positive reputation for working in the industry. In response, Indiana Pork conducted quantitative research to understand the needs and interests of Indiana youth aged 13-18, aiming to tailor programs and investments to better connect with this demographic.
The Jasper County event, held in February, marked the first outreach effort in this endeavor. Students from the Indiana Agriculture & Technology School had the opportunity to interact with pork industry experts, gaining valuable insights into potential career paths and the diverse opportunities available within the agriculture sector.
At the event, Dr. Amy Woods from AMVC and Micah Render from Belstra Milling generously shared their career advice and experiences with the students, offering invaluable perspectives on working in the pork industry. Indiana Pork staff members Chad Martin and Jeanette Merritt played pivotal roles in facilitating the day, ensuring that students had a meaningful and enriching experience.
The event provided students with a platform to explore various aspects of the pork industry, from production and management to research and innovation. By engaging with industry professionals and participating in interactive discussions, students gained a deeper understanding of the opportunities and challenges within the agricultural sector.
As Indiana Pork continues its youth outreach efforts, more engaging events and activities are in the pipeline. Through ongoing collaboration with schools, organizations, and industry partners, Indiana Pork remains committed to inspiring and empowering the next generation of agricultural leaders.
