Ever wondered how well you present ideas in a group setting? Can you hold your own against the best? Kylie Wheeler of Henry County, Indiana, just proved she can! Judges named her the state winner of the Indiana Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ag Professionals Discussion Meet at the 2023 INFB Convention.
National Stage Awaits:
Wheeler's victory lands her a coveted spot representing Indiana at the national contest during the American Farm Bureau Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, from January 19th to 24th. This prestigious competition, open to members under 36, is a highlight of Farm Bureau events.
Beyond Speeches:
Don't be fooled by the "Discussion Meet" title; it's not just about talking! Four participants in each round act as a committee, tackling real-life farm problems like local farmers might do. Judges assess their ability to analyze issues, brainstorm solutions, and collaborate effectively – skills crucial for any successful farmer.
State Finals Tested Mettle: This year's contest was no walk in the park. Wheeler faced tough competition in several elimination rounds, grappling with topics like:
- Financial Savvy for Young Farmers: How can young people secure funding and make sound financial decisions for their farms?
- Defining Sustainable Agriculture: What does "sustainable agriculture" truly mean, and how can we achieve it?
- Farm Bureau's Diversity Mission: How can Farm Bureau engage and cultivate leadership within diverse agricultural communities?
- Water Management Challenges: What role should INFB play in addressing water management issues faced by Hoosier farmers?
Kylie Wheeler emerged victorious, showcasing her impressive ability to think critically, collaborate effectively, and communicate persuasively. Her victory is a testament to the talent and dedication of young Hoosier farmers.
