Purdue Agronomy Farm Prepares Students for Future Careers

Purdue Agronomy Farm Prepares Students for Future Careers

By Andi Anderson

For 75 years, Purdue’s Agronomy Center for Research and Education (ACRE) has provided students with real-world experience in agriculture.

Over the years, students have learned farm management, plant breeding, soil fertility, precision agriculture, and water conservation through hands-on projects.

Alexus Arvin, a senior in natural resources and environmental science, found her passion for environmental science through early experiences as a backpacking guide.

Her studies introduced her to hydrology research at ACRE, where she works on the Drainage Water Recycling project. She collects water samples, monitors water levels, and explores how wetlands help reuse runoff water, especially important during droughts caused by climate change.

Last summer, Arvin dug trenches for irrigation in corn and soybean fields, gaining deeper knowledge of water management. Her experience combines classroom learning with practical skills, preparing her for a future in hydrology or soil remediation.

With minors in environmental policy and soil science, Arvin is on track to earn both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in ecological and environmental engineering.

Don Lamb, now director of the Indiana State Department of Agriculture, also began his agricultural journey at ACRE. As a Purdue student in 1987, Lamb worked at the farm mowing, cleaning, and painting to help pay for his education.

Though he did not work directly with research, his time at ACRE shaped his perspective on farming and agricultural quality.

Today, Lamb is a second-generation farmer at Lamb Farms, Inc., and runs several agricultural businesses, including a composting operation and agronomy services company.

His experience at ACRE built a foundation of pride and attention to detail that continues to influence his work.

Purdue’s ACRE continues to inspire students, offering them opportunities that shape their futures in agriculture, environmental science, and beyond.
