Purdue University will host a special seminar on August 19, 2026, to celebrate the appointment of Channing Arndt, Director of the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) at Purdue University, as the inaugural Robert and Karen Thompson Chair in International Agricultural Economics.
The event will take place in KRAN 661 and will highlight Arndt’s vision for addressing major agricultural, developmental, and environmental challenges through research, teaching, and international collaboration.
The appointment marks an important milestone for Purdue’s College of Agriculture as it continues to strengthen its global leadership in agricultural economics and policy. The seminar will provide attendees with an opportunity to learn about Arndt’s plans for advancing research and education while promoting international engagement on critical issues affecting agriculture and rural development around the world.
Arndt brings extensive experience in agricultural and development economics. He previously served as a faculty member at Purdue University from 1998 to 2007 before returning in 2025 as a research professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics. In addition to his academic role, he currently leads the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP), a globally recognized network that supports economic analysis related to international trade, agriculture, and environmental policy.
The Robert and Karen Thompson Chair in International Agricultural Economics was established in 2023 by Robert Thompson, former Purdue Dean of Agriculture, and Karen Thompson. The professorship was created to attract and support leading scholars working in international trade, development, and comparative agricultural policy. Through this initiative, Purdue aims to further expand its international focus and contribute solutions to global agricultural challenges.
The new chair position reflects the university’s commitment to encouraging innovative research and fostering collaboration across countries and disciplines. By supporting experts in international agricultural economics, Purdue seeks to address issues such as food security, sustainable agricultural production, environmental stewardship, and economic development.
