USDA Offers 1 Billion Relief for Livestock Producers

USDA Offers 1 Billion Relief for Livestock Producers

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced $1 billion in emergency assistance for livestock producers impacted by drought and wildfires in 2023 and 2024.

These funds are being distributed through the Emergency Livestock Relief Program (ELRP), with payments arriving earlier than expected.

This support comes under the American Relief Act, 2025, and is part of USDA’s continuing efforts to help farmers manage the effects of severe weather events.

Using existing data from the Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP), USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) is automating payments for those who already have approved LFP applications. No further action is required from eligible producers.

“The Department of Agriculture is stepping up to support livestock producers by expediting disaster payments when drought and wildfires strike. Under President  leadership, USDA has the backs of ranchers, and that’s why we are delivering much-needed emergency relief ahead of schedule,” said Secretary Rollins.

FSA will factor initial payments at 35% to manage high demand. A second round of payments may be issued if additional funds remain. Assistance for flooding-related losses is expected in summer 2025.

USDA has also launched a public disaster assistance page, accessible via fsa.usda.gov. This resource includes updates and a timeline of all USDA disaster and block grant programs under the 2023/2024 supplemental disaster assistance plan.

Additionally, the Emergency Commodity Assistance Program (ECAP), which also falls under the American Relief Act, has already delivered over $7.7 billion to crop producers. Producers must apply for ECAP assistance by August 15, 2025.

This broad relief strategy reflects USDA’s commitment to supporting rural communities and ensuring stability in the agriculture sector after natural disasters.
