With spring in full swing, Indiana’s 94,000 farmers are heading back to their fields. As a result, rural roads and highways will soon see more large and slow-moving farm equipment. State officials are urging motorists to stay alert and share the roads safely.
The Indiana State Department of Agriculture, Indiana State Police, and other agencies have launched a joint message for drivers this spring: slow down, be patient, and stay safe.
Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith emphasized the importance of caution, especially during this busy season. “Families are travelling for spring sports and graduations, but our farmers are working hard, too. Let’s drive safely and share the roads,” he said.
In 2022, Indiana saw 11 crashes involving farm equipment, resulting in one fatality. As spring continues, more tractors, sprayers, and equipment hauling agricultural goods will be on the roads, often moving under 25 mph and taking up most of the roadway.
Indiana State Police Superintendent Anthony Scott added, “Let’s all give farm machinery the space and patience needed. Safety is our top priority.”
Motorists are reminded of the following tips:
- Be patient and allow time for farmers to pull over safely.
- Avoid passing in No Passing Zones or near intersections, bridges, and railroad crossings.
- Always check if a farmer is making a left turn before passing.
- Don’t tailgate—farm equipment may stop suddenly.
- Allow extra travel time and stay focused on the road.
Don Lamb, ISDA Director and farmer, noted that moving equipment is often the toughest part of planting season. “Farmers appreciate motorists who pull over and drive safely. We all want to reach our destinations safely,” he said.
